When we hear the phrase “good intentions,” we often think of people doing things in good faith with the expectation of a positive outcome. With good intentions the aim is to ensure we impact or affect others in a POSITIVE way. Empathy, and being able to place yourself in others positions is vital towards achieving a good outcome. Respectful discourse and interactions will aid in getting closer to this result. 
  1. Nonviolent Communication: Fostering a safe and sensitive environment for communication will assist in resolving issues in a peaceful and considerate way. Aim towards communicating your ideals in a way in which others are not blamed or attacked in the process.
  1. Feedback and Confirmation: As well as openly conveying your intentions to others, encourage feedback and response from them so you can ensure that both parties are in understanding. With open dialogue that includes questions and clarifications, you reduce any window for misunderstanding. 

Though these strategies can aid in bringing your good intentions to light, acknowledge the barriers that can prevent effective communication. These barriers include lack of attention, emotional interference, cultural differences, and assumptions. You can avoid these barriers from affecting how your intentions are demonstrated by practicing mindful listening, developing emotional intelligence, and being clear and direct in your expression.
